The Staff Scientist, Process Engineering Technologies, is responsible for planning and executing chemical process development and optimization, solid form screenings and crystallization process deve! lopment and presenting and interpreting the data obtained. Deliver projects on target with quantity, quality, time, and within budget. Execute research and analysis of complex problems such as oiling out and chiral resolution. Develop kinetics of reaction using off-line and on-line techniques coupled with engineering models. Analyze situations or data requiring evaluation of intangible variables using insightful applications of theoretical knowledge.
Job Responsibilities:
Use statistical design of experiment techniques to develop robust batch and continuous chemical and crystallization processes at laboratory scale.
Develop engineering models that describe the kinetics of chemical/physical operations (e.g. chemical reaction, distillation, etc.) at various scales.
Perform solid form screening experiments to find various polymorphs or salts of an API with minimal supervision.
Test and calculate engineering parameters of process e! quipment (e.g. overall heat transfer coefficient, mixing energ! y, etc.) and contribute in equipment parameters database development of Johnson Matthey fine chemical plants.
Use the Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) for in-depth understanding of the processes.
Operate Mettler Toledo RC1 for reaction calorimetry and analyze data.
Frequently interact with internal and external clients during conference calls and meetings.
Regularly write technical reports and deliver presentations to technical groups.
Maintain the development equipment in best conditions at all time.

Essential Skills and Experience:
PhD in Chemical Engineering or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years related experience in a pharmaceutical industry. BS must be Chemical Engineering.
MS in Chemical Engineering or equivalent with a minimum of 9 years related experience in a pharmaceutical industry. BS must be Chemical Engineering.
BS in Chemical Engineering! with a minimum of 12 years related experience in a pharmaceutical industry.
Minimum of 3 years of technical experience and understanding process and research development of APIs.
Ability to lead projects and provide direction to various levels of Chemist/engineer
Knowledge of crystallization engineering, polymorph screening and selection and salt screening/selection.
Knowledge of XRPD, DSC, TGA, NMR and DVS equipment and data interpretation.
Skilled at problem solving and understanding processes through applying fundamental scientific and engineering principles.
Excellent engineering mathematical ability and statistical design of experiments (DoE) experience.
Comfortable operating process development equipment/PAT tools and ability to learn new equipment.
Ability to plan, organize, and oversee multiple independent research programs.
Ability to adjust working plans and manage time to accommodat! e the dynamic nature of real-life projects.
Ability to work in! dependently and in a team environment.
Excellent communication skills and ability to build working relationships within multifunctional teams.
Skills/Experience Valued but not required:
Knowledge of Mettler Toledo RC1 unit and PAT tools such as FBRM, PVM and React IR.
Understanding of Quality by Design (QbD) Concept.
Knowledge of hydrogenation scale-up.
Experience on continuous processing.
K nowledge of Microsoft Office.

While performing the duties of this job, it is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands or arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear, and smell when necessary for job activity. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close, distance, peripheral, color perception, a! nd the ability to adjust focus.
Regularly works new moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, odors, heat, cold, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
