Smith College is accepting applications for a Development Officer. Reporting to the Director of Individual Giving, the Development office manages a geographically assigned pool of prospective donors through the fund-raising continuum from discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, focusing on prospects capable of six-figure and higher gifts that result in meaningful, specific impact on both the life of the donor and the college. Travel frequently in geographically assigned territory to build relationships on behalf of the college. Gift conversations will include annual fund, endowed, capital, current restricted and planned! gift components. This is a full-time, campaign position that ! is anticipated to end on June 30, 2016.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct Fundraising: Design and implement strategies for discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of 175-200 prospective major gift donors. Responsibilities in this area include pipeline management, travel planning, visits and follow up, drafting proposals, and planning and overseeing small cultivation gatherings. Working collaboratively with and in support of volunteers to cultivate and solicit donors for college-wide priorities. Manage assigned geographic region. Recommend and assist with programming involving the president and other senior administrators. Offer prospect strategy counsel to the president and development staff who are managing other prospects. Additional expectations include collaborating with other gift officers toward shared goals, and meeting independent goals set for visits and other activity.
Development Administration: Coordinate! and support senior administrators, faculty, and alumnae volunteers on cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship calls to prospective major gift donors. As assigned, act as a liaison with one or more programs on campus to provide up-to-date information to colleagues and respond to fundraising related concerns. Participate in short- and long-range planning with colleagues and directors in the continued development and evaluation of the program. Duties will include visit notes, updating prospect database, consulting with research colleagues, correspondence, proposal writing, stewardship and other written and verbal communications with donors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree plus 3 to 5 years of relevant experience including fund-raising, sales, marketing or non-profit management experience and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in higher education preferred.
Skills: A! reas of expertise include developing strategy, securing major gifts alo! ng with consistent annual fund participation, relationship building and collaborative work with constituents, volunteers and colleagues, and maintaining an aggressive travel schedule (expected to spend one-third to one-half of their time on the road visiting individually and in small groups with prospective donors). Ability to complete all components of gift transactions, deal with confidential and sensitive material, have a flexible work schedule (some evenings and weekends), excellent organizational skills, excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and a basic knowledge of planned giving vehicles. Capability to work independently and collaboratively. Commitment to learning and upholding the Guiding Principles of Advancement.
