KEY REQUIREMENTS

DUTIES:
The position ! is located administratively in the Sterilization and
Processing Service for the Nursing Service. The position is
located at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Roxbury, Ma. Some
of the duties are as follows;
Performing duties associated
with the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, distribution,
storage and ordering of all instruments and equipment for the section;
Collecting and reviewing
daily instrument quality control data and graphing results maintaining
oversight of inventory quantities;
Maintaining data and sharing
with SPS/Logistics services for trend analysis;
Determining employee
training needs, developing personal learning plans, tracking employee
training progress and requirements, developing and maintaining competency
assessments;
Developing plans to enhance
patient flow through the operating rooms; studying workload data,
quantities of instru! ments required, turn-around time for processed
instruments, etc.;
Planning the work of
subordinate employees; setting and adjusting priorities and preparing
schedules for completion of work;
Assigning work based on
priorities, difficulty of tasks and capabilities of employees; evaluating
work accomplished;
Giving advice, counsel and
instruction to employees; resolving minor/serious complaints or grievances
and referring complex problems to a higher level supervisor; effecting
minor/major disciplinary measures as needed;
Interviewing candidates for
positions within the unit, recommending appointments, promotions or
reassignments; recommending awards and bonuses as appropriate;
Performing other duties as
assigned.
Work Schedule: 1(one) position shift hours are 7:30am to 4pm, the other position shift hours are 3:30pm to 12am (midnight). The positions are with rotation to off tours; days, evenings, nights and weekend. Must be flexible.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
THE POSITION REQUIRES:
One (1) year of
specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills
and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is
typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be
creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the
next lower grade level in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience
include: working in sterilization and processing, processing
and distribution of equipment and instruments in a medical facility that
includes; applying aseptic techniques; decontamination, sterile preparation,
and preparing reusable medical equipment by sterilizing and processing for
distribution; planning wor! k to be accomplished and setting priorities; ability
to supervise e! mployees; collecting and compiling data; and developing and
maintaining quality management systems for sterilization processing, and
distribution. (*To receive credit for these skills they must be documented in
your application/resume.)

SUBSTITUTION OF
EDUCATION:
one and one/half full years of progressively higher level graduate education
from an accredited institution in a related field of study that demonstrates
your ability to perform the duties of this position? Eighteen (18) semester
hours is usually considered as satisfying 1 year of full-time study. (*If you
answer yes to this question, transcripts are required.)

COMBINATION:
A combination of
specialized experience and graduate education as described that demonstrates
your ability to perform the duties of this position? Only graduate education in
excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level! may be used to
qualify with a combination at the GS-08 grade level (*If you answer yes to this
question, your experience must be documented in your resume and transcripts are
required.)
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
Knowledge
of management principles, regulations, policies, procedures and duties to plan,
direct and coordinate the complexities of a sterilization and processing unit
Ability
to supervise, perform administrative and personnel management functions for a
sterilization and processing unit
Knowledge
in sterilization practices used to determine the methods and procedures for the
sterilization of a wide variety of sophisticated and technical surgical and
medical instruments and supplies, also knowledge of recommendations with
respect to environment of care, safet! y, infection control and maintenance of
sterility, decontamination,! and assembly of instruments
Knowledge
of assessing, monitoring, developing and assisting with implementation of
corrective action plans for instruments and reusable medical equipment by
processing, decontamination, sterilization, and
biological monitoring
Ability
to effectively communicate, negotiate, problem solve and team build
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The
work requires walking, standing, bending and lifting up to 25 pounds. The
activity demands of the day may be both mentally and physically
stressful. Work is performed in various areas of patient and non-patient
care which involves moderate risks or discomforts and may require special
safety precautions. Incumbent will be working around moving equipment, carts
and machines. Incumbent will be required to use protective clothing in
particular areas (i.e. sterile room, operating room, and warehouse) such as
masks, safety shoes, sho! e covers, goggles, and gloves.
