The Security Officer performs a variety of duties involving safety, security, emergency management, and related activities. Patrols buildings and grounds, monitors! parking and traffic, responds to and investigates security incidents, and assists and interacts with patients, visitors and staff as appropriate.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Job duties specific to this position:
Conducts preventative security and safety patrols throughout buildings and grounds.
Provides security for the hospitalâs patients, visitors, staff and employees and safeguards the property by immediately responding to requests and emergency codes.
Maintains alertness for unusual or abnormal conditions or suspicious activities.
Observes unauthorized persons and notifies supervisor or police appropriately.
Locks and unlocks doors following established procedures.
Enforces parking for patients, staff and visitors according to HealthAlliance parking policies.
Inspects equipment for faulty or malfunctioning operation and reports to appropriate department.
Investigates reports of leaks, broken win! dows or facility damage, etc and informs Engineering.
Repo! rts potential fire or safety hazards.
Performs and participates in security, safety, and facilities inspections, fire watches, and alarm checks.
Participates in associated drills and tests.
Actively participates in the enforcement of the Tobacco Free policy with visitors and staff.
Works in collaboration with Engineering, Boiler room and Grounds departments on snow plowing/sanding, landscaping and miscellaneous contractorâs notifications and communications.
On occasion, shovels or clears snow from walkways and/or spread ice melting salt mixture as directed or indicated by weather conditions.
Assists in various security situations as required or directed as outlined in the Security Policy Manual.
Reports questionable conditions, incidents and discrepancies to management or other appropriate staff.
Writes detailed, accurate and objective Security Incident Reports, Daily Activity Sheets and log of activities to initiate follow-up investigation! .
Directs vehicular traffic as necessary. Assists in maintaining traffic control during snow removal operation. Keeps emergency vehicle lanes clear at all times.
Observes and maintains radio communication at all times. Also communicates using computers, fax machines and telephones according to departmental policy.
Greets and assists visitors, patients and others. Follows through with customer questions, requests, and concerns in a timely fashion. Helps the customer get the information he/she needs.
Provides testimony in state and federal courts as may be required.
Assists with patient observations (watches and holds) upon request.
Maintains all required training and certifications (OCAT, PATH, MOAB, patient observer, etc.).
Possesses the flexibility to works weekends, holidays and off-shifts as required by department staffing needs.
Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective security operations for the protection of the people, data, property within the HealthAlliance facilities.
Ability to maintain calm composure under stressful conditions.
Ability to use effective people skills (e.g., eye contact, tone of voice, facial expression) in person, on the phone (identifies self), and in ever! y contact as a representative of HealthAlliance.
Ability to handle ! interpersonal situations and crisis management scenarios.
Displays sound customer service skills.
Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and routine correspondence.
Ability to gather facts and evidence.
Ability to deescalate and physically interact as necessary to disruptive or harmful behavior.
Ability to lift patients, walk at a rapid pace, walk and stand for extended periods of time and withstand adverse weather conditions.
Computer literate and able to use e-mail and basic Microsoft Word applications.
Ability to speak read and write clearly in English.
EDUCATION:
An Associate's degree in Criminal Justice is preferred. High School diploma required.
EXPERIENCE:
One year previous experience in hospital or campus security, law enforcement, corrections or military is preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed abo! ve may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC. :
Valid and unencumbered Massachusetts driverâs license.
Must become MOAB, PATH and OCAT certified within one month of hire and maintain all certifications.
Must attain IAHSS Basic certification within the first six months of employment.
